  • New Year’s Eve versus The FNG: Why Wait for January?

Ah, New Year’s Day.

The ceremonial time of year when we promise ourselves that this will be the year we’ll finally get our act together. We’ll wake up at 5am, meditate, run a marathon before breakfast, and drink kale smoothies like they’re going out of fashion. January 1st is often billed as a magical date – a clean slate for all your ambitions.

The thing is, New Year’s resolutions have an inherent flaw: they pin all your hopes for self-improvement on a single day. As if the change of a calendar year is going to suddenly make you more disciplined, energetic, or resistant to a pint of lager and a packet of crisps. (Spoiler alert: it won’t.)

This is where the FNG mentality comes in. Fresh New Guy (or gal, or human, for that matter) isn’t waiting for the clock to strike midnight on 31st December. It’s about waking up every single day and deciding, “Right, let’s have a go at being a better version of myself – today.” (No fireworks required.)

The Problem with Resolutions

Let’s start with the word itself: resolution. It sounds so serious, doesn’t it? Like something you’d write in a company’s annual strategy plan. “Our 2024 resolution: increase productivity by 20% and avoid chocolate entirely.”

The truth is, resolutions often fail because they’re either too grand (learn French, climb Everest, become a vegan chef by February) or too vague (“be happier” – what does that even mean?).

Fresh Starts, Every Day

The FNG isn’t tied to dates, deadlines, or unrealistic expectations. Each morning, you wake up with the same opportunity to be a bit better than you were yesterday. Didn’t exercise yesterday? No problem. Get outside for a brisk walk today. Ate an entire Christmas pudding last night? No sweat – eat something green at lunch today.

Life isn’t a pass/fail test; it’s an ongoing experiment.

And the beauty of this mindset is that it’s adaptable. Fresh starts aren’t reserved for January. They’re just as valid on a rainy Wednesday in March or a lazy Sunday in September. Forget the pressure of new year, new you. How about new day, new opportunities?

Let’s Be Real

You’re not going to suddenly morph into a monk-like figure of discipline overnight. You’ll still have those days when the snooze button wins, or the allure of a takeaway trumps your meal-prepping intentions. That’s OK.

The key is consistency over time. Small, daily improvements add up far quicker than massive, unsustainable goals. Plus, there’s no guilt when you have an off day, because you’ve always got tomorrow.

Embrace a Fresh Mentality

So, here’s the deal: ditch the resolutions and embrace the FNG mentality instead. Every day is an opportunity to start fresh, without the pomp, pressure, or hangover-guilt of New Year’s Day.

Make small changes, smile at your own mistakes, and remember that life’s about progress, not perfection. Ready to embrace your inner FNG? Let’s start today. Or, if it’s already gone pear-shaped, there’s always tomorrow.  😉
